Times squared

Times squared
Originally known as Longacre Square, this area of Manhattan was renamed in honor of the New York Times building, a huge structure necessitating a subway stop to this part of the city in the early 20th century. The area became synonymous with Broadway theatre as the rowdier amusements that had been part of Longacre Square's rambunctious history receded and the area was revitalized. Many theatres were built in the vicinity. By World War I, it had become the center of New York's theatrical activity. Times Square remains the geographic center of the Broadway community into the 21st century.
